The Customer's Challenge

AI is disrupting the EdTech landscape at a blistering speed. In a purposeful effort to disrupt traditional schooling, better aid teachers, and stay ahead of other options on the market with AI, the client was looking to develop personalized AI assistants to support student learning.

At first, the EdTech software company recognized dozens of opportunities to build AI into its platform but lacked the foundational infrastructure. Without a clear AI strategy, time to value was slow for new AI initiatives. 

The first iteration of AI on the learning platform was perceived to be impersonal and ineffective, primarily due to data integration challenges stemming from governance, stewardship, and content curation issues.

After a failed generative AI proof-of-concept (POC) hallucinated in front of the CEO, the customer needed help righting the ship on their AI vision.

phData's Solution

With AI aspirations and goals still in place and lessons from a failed AI POC attempt, the customer brought in phData to establish a healthy AI culture. They hoped to address the headaches of the failed POC and set the foundation for future initiatives. 

The solution was a modular platform for AI assistants (tutors, graders) that provides accuracy and safety to students and teachers. 

The fully contextualized chat orchestration begins when a student queries a digital tutor for help. Using the AWS API Gateway, the learner query invocates lambda functions that fetch contextual information from a feature store containing student information (nicknames, favorite subjects, etc.) and begins the conversation and session. 

Additional curriculum information is then surfaced from external software called Omnisearch, a search platform that helps users find relevant information across various types of content. The query information between the student and the AWS Lex V2 chatbot is processed by the Lex Handler, and outputs are generated by an Anthropic LLM (Claude Sonnet 3.5) hosted on AWS Bedrock

The conversation and session are served on AWS ElastiCache to manage session context and serve as an online feature store for student data. The LLM receives the query and supplemental student and content information and delivers the helpful response the student is looking for.

As a result of the newly introduced AI application, learners experienced a significant improvement in the overall experience when working with a digital tutor, including:

Moreover, with the completion of an AI Foundation Platform and the establishment of an AI Readiness & Roadmap, the customer has the building blocks to create future AI chatbot applications with a 5x faster time to value, thanks to phData.

Since the digital tutor’s inception, additional AI use cases have been developed and moved to production, including USMO mapping to ensure compliance with geographical learning standards and tutor session summaries that learners can review later.
