Beyond The Data: Eugenia Pais, Sr. Data Engineer

By Izzy OKonek

Welcome to Beyond the Data, a series that investigates the people behind the talent of phData.

In this blog, we’re featuring Eugenia Pais, a Sr. Data Engineer at phData.

Eugenia recently joined our team in Latin America and has made a significant impact. She’s earned multiple certifications, made substantial contributions to successful projects, and built strong relationships within the team. Beyond her work with data, Eugenia has fascinating hobbies and a passion for travel. Explore Eugenia’s story outside work to learn more about this remarkable individual.

Let’s jump in!

Tell us your name, where you’re from, and a little about you.

I’m Eugenia. I was born in a small city called San Ramón, next to the Santa Lucía River in the Canelones department of Uruguay. When I started college, I moved to Montevideo, where I currently live.

A fun fact about me is that my name is difficult to pronounce. Check out this YouTube video to learn how to say it!

What do you do on any given day as a Sr. Data Engineer?

As a Senior Data Engineer, I wear many hats. On the technical side, I clean and organize data, design storage solutions, and build transformation pipelines. Equally important is the non-technical work: analyzing project requirements, investigating diverse data sources, and collaborating closely with the team to ensure our data solutions align with business needs.

How do you like working for a consulting company?

Working for a consulting company has been a great experience. I enjoy the various projects and industries I work with, constantly challenging me to broaden my skill set. The nature of consulting means there’s always something new to learn, keeping me engaged and motivated.

What separates phData from other jobs you’ve had?

What sets phData apart is its genuine focus on data. Unlike in my previous roles, I engage with the entire data lifecycle, from modeling to deriving insights, which perfectly aligns with my passion for data. The emphasis on continuous learning and the supportive atmosphere make it a uniquely rewarding workplace.

One of the things that impressed me most from day one is the strong sense of community within the company. Even though we work in a remote-first environment, there’s a tangible feeling of belonging and warmth among everyone. I was fortunate to meet most of my colleagues at an annual picnic just a few days after starting, which made me feel like a part of the team right from the beginning. I felt genuinely welcomed, and we had a fantastic time together!

How has your job evolved over the past few years?

The evolution of my job over the past years reflects a journey of self-discovery within the tech world. I began my IT career as a Front-End Developer, later expanding my skills to become a Full-Stack Developer. However, a common thread existed throughout these roles: my persistent interest in analysis and data.

Even while working in software development, I gravitated towards tasks involving deep problem analysis and data-driven solution finding. These experiences were like signposts, constantly reminding me of my true passion.

The pivotal moment in my career came when I fully embraced this passion. I consciously chose to pivot away from general software development and specialize in Data Engineering.

Since making this decision, my role has transformed dramatically. I’ve moved from building user interfaces and backend systems to designing data models, creating data pipelines, and gaining valuable insights from complex datasets. To further this evolution, I’m pursuing a Master’s in Data Science, which will help me deepen my expertise and stay current with the latest advancements in the field.

This journey has reshaped my career from a software generalist to a data specialist. However, the journey doesn’t end here; as the field of data science continues to grow and evolve, I’m excited to see how my role will further develop in the coming years.

Outside of work, what's your life like? What do you do for fun?

Outside work, I enjoy indoor and outdoor activities that help me relax and recharge. At home, I love spending time with my family and indulging in simple pleasures like playing video games, reading books, singing, and listening to music. When the weather is nice, I spend time outdoors tending to my small garden, which connects me with nature in a peaceful and rewarding way.

Being Uruguayan, one of my favorite pastimes is drinking mate along the Rambla (waterfront promenade) while enjoying the sea view. It’s a cherished cultural tradition that I hold dear.

Lastly, I love to travel whenever I get the chance. Exploring new places and experiencing different cultures is a passion of mine.

What is your favorite type of cuisine? And where is the best place to enjoy it?

My favorite cuisine is Italian, especially pasta dishes. Good pasta never disappoints. It’s always delicious! The best place to enjoy it is at home, particularly during our traditional Sunday family lunches. And if it’s homemade pasta, that’s even better!

Where's the next place you'd like to travel to, and what would be the first thing you do there?

Japan is next on my travel wishlist. I have a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. My first stop would be to see the cherry blossoms and explore the natural beauty of the surroundings.
